PosAbility

Back to Activities

PosAbility runs exercise sessions for people living with long-term neurological conditions such as multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's, muscular dystrophy and many more. The focus is always on being Positive About Your Ability!

This activity is good for wellbeing because

  • the groups are welcoming, fun, encouraging and sociable;
  • your confidence will grow as you maintain and extend your mobility and strength;
  • exercise makes you feel good!

“I had a stroke two years ago and was referred to PosAbility by the physiotherapist at the Princess of Wales Hospital, Ely. I enjoy the class as it gives me the opportunity to exercise and to interact with other people. The staff who take our classes are very caring and very well trained, I also enjoy the memory and quiz games. Everyone is very friendly.”

PosAbility runs chair-based exercise (CBE) groups for people living with long-term illnesses including, but not limited to, strokes, Parkinson’s, neurological conditions, multiple sclerosis and muscular dystrophy. All  groups offer professional and effective programmes and 1:1 support.

All instructors are fully trained, and PosAbility team members and volunteers are Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) checked.

What to expect

Sessions are friendly, welcoming and informal. You don’t need to book ahead – just turn up in comfortable clothes. Wheelchair users are welcome.

Each session is two hours long. The first half is a group session using a range of exercises to improve coordination, stretch muscles and mobilise joints. The second half is an opportunity to focus on your individual needs. Equipment used includes parallel bars to support you to rise from a chair or to walk, and free weights to increase muscle tone and strength.

No-one will expect you to do more than you feel comfortable with – instructors are there to support and encourage you to feel safe and confident. After each session is time for refreshments and chat.

Venues are fully wheelchair accessible.

If you are not sure that a session will be suitable for you, you can talk to a member of the team beforehand.
