Bartlow Hills is actually a group of Roman burial mounds set in beautiful woodland. This historical monument is free to visit and publicly accessible all year round and you can climb the tallest 'hill' for a breathtaking view of the surrounding area.
This activity is good for wellbeing because
- being outside and in the natural world is a good stress buster;
- physical exercise improves mood – there are paths for walking, running or dog walking;
- it is a peaceful place to have a moment of calm.
What to expect
Bartlow Hills includes four Roman burial mounds – three of which are publicly accessible. One of the ‘hills’ is the highest burial mound in Britain and you can climb steps to the top, giving you a great view.
There’s an information panel on site so you can find out more about why the Romans built the burial mounds and what artefacts have been found there.
The site is in woodland and may get muddy so bring walking boots or wellies if it has been raining. If you are planning a long visit, bring drinks and snacks (and binoculars to enjoy the view). There is no visitor centre, cafe, shop or public toilet but there is a dog-friendly local pub with a big car park nearby.
